About us

The Norwegian Team for Hernia Surgery in Low-Resource Settings was established in 2019, under the leadership of Dr. Odd Mjåland, in collaboration with Operation Hernia, a non-profit trust based in England. Our primary goal is to provide sustainable and high-quality hernia surgery and training in low-resource settings on a regular basis. Since its establishment, our team has successfully completed several missions, conducting surgical procedures on more than 400 patients. With each mission, we have gained valuable insights and experience in performing hernia surgery in resource-constrained areas. We recognise the importance of systematically training local doctors and increasing the surgical capacity of local hospitals. Based on our experience, we have developed a sustainable mission structure that combines hernia surgery education, surgical productivity, and quality control. Our model provides high-quality surgical training to local doctors and empowers local hospitals to develop their own structured training programmes. We utilise a digital platform for surgical training called Alfred Surgery. During our five-day training missions, we can perform roughly 50 inguinal hernia operations and train four local doctors. Quality data is recorded throughout the entire treatment period, including six-month follow-up data. Through the Alfred platform, local trainers can continue surgical training and systematically assess competence, even in the absence of our team. The Norwegian team supports local hospitals and supplies necessary materials to sustain surgical training between missions, with support being provided to the degree our financial status allows. In 2024, the core team, consisting of Dr. Odd Mjåland, Dr. Robbert-Jan Lindeman, and Dr. Hans Gunnar Botnen, established a non-profit organisation called The Norwegian International Hernia Team. This allows the team to apply for funding and receive donations to secure future activities.
